The motoryacht "VICTORIA" is an exceptional example of traditional american yacht construction. In her true classic form she is in fully operational condition and ready to cruise or live aboard. A a handsome rugged wooden vessel she was designed to carry her passengers in style and comfort spanning great coastal reaches if desired. The yacht was designed and built in 1971 by Joseph L. Conboy Associates of Urbanna, Virginia, whose yard was located just off the Rappahannock River. Her dimensions are: 55' LOA; 17' beam; 4'8" draft with 70,000 lbs. displacement. Her full displacement hull is framed in Old Growth Long Leaf Yellow Pine including keel and bottom planking. She is Cedar strip planked topsides above the waterline and Silicone Bronze fastened. The tall Bulwarks are laid up solid Honduras mahogany planks.
She was purchased from a famous Broadway actor best known for his role in "My Fair Lady" in 1991 and underwent an extensive refit in Stuart FL during that winter. Her recent life under the ownership of a very experienced and knowledgeable yachtsman has been spent cruising New England hailing from Essex CT. She has received conscientious care while maintained by a full time crewman along with one of the regions leading yards. Powered by a single Caterpillar D333, 185hp turbo-charged diesel engine the yacht is extremely economical and offers significant range.

The fantail with overhead which houses a transom settee with storage, Teak table, wicker armchairs, access to the generous covered side decks and 4-step ladder to boat deck . Access opens into the salon which spans aft to amidships on the main deck. The salon is fully furnished with two love seats adjoining an end table, antique writing desk and chest, entertainment center with TV and stereo, built in bookshelves and companionway down to the lower accommodation deck. The passageway to starboard leads to the galley to port with large buffet with storage to starboard. Three steps up deliver one to the wheel house with helm area / pilot pedestal seat and settee / watch berth behind. There are doors to side decks port and starboard and companionway down to lower deck. The sight lines are excellent with large windscreen and side windows. The helm console is expansive with plenty of room for flush mounted electronics and chart table. The lower deck houses Owner stateroom & Head aft of the engine room and guest/crew stateroom and head forward. The engine room is spacious and all components are easily accessed for service. The aft stations in the boat are steering gear, water tanks and other components. This space also houses a nifty shop complete with washer/dryer, workbenches, tools, bins of spare parts with everything nicely organized.
The salon is beautifully furnished with two loveseats adjoining an end table, antique writing desk and chest, entertainment center with TV and stereo, built in bookshelves and companionway down to the lower accommodation deck. There is a large Teak drop leaf table that stows out of the way or can be deployed in the Salon for dining. Carpets and upholstery was recently updated and is very tastefully done in a traditional nautical theme.
GALLEY & DOMESTIC SYSTEMS
The galley reefer is powered by 12 volts with separate condensers for the freezer and the chill compartment. Louvered door openings to the condensers are located in the wheelhouse and can be opened for better circulation when demands cause the condensers to overheat. A small 12 volt fan can also help with air circulation
Propane is stored in two aluminum containers located in the stack on the boat deck. A solenoid switch located above the galley stove controls the flow of gas.
Potable water can come from one of two sources: storage tanks or shore-tie. There are two 400 gallon tanks located in the lazarette. A 12 volt motor pumps water from these tanks into a pressurized tank and from there throughout the boat on demand. A 25 gallon hot-water tank is located forward of the pressure tank. It has two sources of power for heating water: A 220 volt element energized when plugged in to a shore tie or the generator and a heat exchanger from the Cat. When tied up to a dock, a hose can be lead from the fittings on either the port or starboard side of the wheelhouse, thus not depleting the storage tanks.
PILOT HOUSE & HELM
The pilot house is the command station of the boat and offers exceptional visibility and comfort. The large bench seat aft of the helmsman can accommodate guests and also serve as watch bunk. Pilothouse doors port and starboard enable quick access to the side and fore decks.
The wind and speed instruments are located in the wheelhouse mounted over the wheel at the overhead. Wind input is generated by means of a wind vane mounted on the main mast spreader. The speed impeller, a small prop mounted on a fitting, is mounted in a through-hull fitting located under the forward-cabin sole.
MASTER STATEROOM & HEAD
The Master cabin is accessible from the salon stairwell as well as a passageway through the engine room and the forward cabin. The bunk arrangement in the master is athwartships full size berths (2) with drawers beneath. There is a large chest of drawers, night stand with drawers. The head is en-suite and has a separate stall shower. This cabin is beautifully appointed with wall to wall carpet, wall coverings, laminate bulkheads and varnished Teak trim. There is classic framed artwork and nautical appointments throughout.
GUEST / CREW STATEROOM & HEAD
The guest/crew cabin is a v-berth style layout with full size lowers and twin upper bunks accommodating up to 4 persons and is accessible through stair way down as you move forward to the pilot house. This cabin is also decorated of the era and fitting to the style of the antique nautical history of this yacht including extensive collection of bulkhead mounted nautical art. There is ample storage with drawers, lockers and hanging lockers. The guest head is forward of this cabin in the fore-peak and has a separate stall shower. There is a ladder to the foredeck hatch for crew access or emergency egress. Beautiful Teak hull ceilings adorn the head and cabin.
The vessel is powered by a single Caterpillar, turbo charged, diesel, model: D333, Six cylinder, 185 HP. This is a fresh water cooled, engine with 2,159. The transmission is a Capitol gear, 5 to 1 ratio. The prop shaft is stainless steel, 2 " size. The propeller is a 30.5 "x 22", four bladed Nibral. Rudder is a huge cast bronze, secure in the rudder port. The exhaust is raw water cooled through rubber hose to stainless steel muffler-wet to the transom. The steering system is chain and sprocket with wire rope and quadrant. There are three 2000 GPH 12 VDC electric bilge pumps with auto float switches. Through hull fittings are bronze with bronze ball valve type sea-cocks.
There are three (3) fuel tanks steel rectangular shaped fuel storage tanks outboard of the engines, 2 starboard, one port. The fuel fill is rubber hose USCG type A-2, the supply/return lines are neoprene rubber lines USCG type A-1. In addition to the engines integral fuel filter, a pair of external Racor filters works in tandem to filter fuel before it reaches the engine. There is also a third Racor system which filters fuel within the individual tanks before reaching the tandem filters. A system for sounding the three tanks is located on the bulkhead just forward of the main panel leading down to the forward cabin. In addition to the integral spin-on lube filter on the Cat, there is also an external oil filter system mounted on the after bulkhead of the engine room. Its heating element is powered by a 12 volt circuit from the auxiliary panel, mounted over the generator. The filter is replaced annually.
A new 12 KW Lister generator was installed in the spring of 1996. Its starter is powered by an independent 12V battery bank located forward of and contiguous to the generator.
There are four separate but interrelated electric systems on "VICTORIA": 12V DC, 24V DC, 110V AC and 220V AC. The 12v DC powers domestic requirements including: electronics, lighting, reefer, VHF, radio/TV, water pump, bilge pumps, generator starter, instrumentation, oil change pump, shore cord reeler. The 24 volt powers the Cat starter, the air compressor, and the autopilots. The 110/220 volt powers the anchor windless, air conditioning/heat pump, the oil burning furnace, the washer/dryer, the hot-water heater, 2 battery chargers, 12 and 24 volts, and the reefer when in the 110 volt mode.
There are two panels on Victoria, one at the top side of the ladder (i.e. stairwell) going below into the forward stateroom. This contains circuit breakers for 12, 24, 110, and 220 volts and are all clearly marked. It also contains a volt meter for reading the condition of the 12 volt batteries. (Voltmeters for the 24 volt starting batteries of the Cat and the 12 volt starting batteries of the generator are mounted on the wheelhouse instrument panel.) Another panel, exclusively 12 volt, is located on the bulkhead over the generator. The 12 volt main switch is located in the engine room on the forward bulkhead along with the battery chargers and the knife switches. There is an ammeter measuring the output of the 12 volt alternator on the wheelhouse instrument panel.
An additional shore power cord is located in the forward deck locker and can be plugged into the forward fittings near the base of the starboard and port wheelhouse doors. The shore power can be activated from any one of the three positions.
There are 12 and 24 volt battery chargers located on the forward bulkhead in the engine room. They are activated by switches in the main panel on the stairwell.
There is a solar collector located on the after boat deck which supplies the 12 volt battery banks. The volt voltage age of these banks can be read individually by switching the meter dial located in the stairwell panel.
The yacht electrical system is 24 volt DC starting and house with 12 volt DC genset and heater. The shore power is 110 volt AC. Circuit protection is by breaker switches located at the Bass panel and in the engine space. There are two banks of batteries. Two 4D Interstate batteries for 24 VDC starting system. There also four x 6 VDC Interstate batteries, lead acid. All batteries are secured in acid proof containers with protective covers. There are two Guest rotary disconnect switches. The battery chargers are Newmar 30 amp plus a larger Charles Charger 50 amp. There is one 50 amp/220 volt shore inlet connection in the starboard side plus one 50 amp/220 volt AC outlet in the port.
There are 3 bellows-type bilge pumps on automatic float switches which control: forward-cabin bilge; engine-room bilge; and aft- cabin and lazarette bilge. Circuit breakers controlling these pumps are located in the main panel. They are automatic or can can be controlled manually by switches located on the wheelhouse control panel. A clutch-driven bilge pump is located on the forward port side of the Cat and can be engaged by hand in an emergency whenever a large quantity of water has to be expelled.
There are two holding tanks to accommodate the two heads. The forward is located under that stateroom's cabin sole; the after in the starboard locker in the after cabin. Valves are located in each head under the parquet sole. One is the overboard-discharge valve for offshore use; the other is the holding-tank valve for restricted waters. Pumping out at dockside is accomplished through the deck fitting. Offshore they can be pumped manually overboard by pumps located forward under the head sole and aft in the after part of the large hanging locker in the aft cabin.
HULL & DECK
Design is a classic, full displacement with skeg keel, single screw motor yacht by Joseph Conboy. The vessels full length keel is built of old growth Long Leaf Yellow Pine. Attached to the keel are two heavy steel "L" angle stocks, one on each side, ¾" x 6" through bolted to the full length of the keel. The bottom is Long Leaf Pine to the chines, bottom is painted red anti-fouling. Topsides planking is Cypress strip edge glued. Bulwarks are heavily built up from solid mahogany planks 2" x 5" laid flat. The tall bulwarks are maroon colored.Topsides are white painted. Frames, floors and stringers are Virginia White Oak. Decks are all teak overlay with black Polysifide fastened to plywood. Deck beams are massive 3 ½" x 4" and 1 ¾" x 4". The masts and booms were Spruce clear varnished.
The silicon bronze fasteners are #12 and #14 x 2" used above the waterline and 3" all below the waterline.
SAFETY & MISC.
There are three anchors on board and two anchor rodes. The windless is powered by 110 volt motor and thus requires the generator. The working anchor is a 45 pound CQR plow with 300 ft. of chain, which is stored in a locker located just below the windless. The chain anchor rode is marked with yellow bunting at ten foot intervals up to 200 feet of its 300 feet length. There are two deck switches, one forward of the other. The forward one controls the windless and works with constant pressure. The after one is an on-and-off switch which controls the sea-water pressure on the chain-wash-down hose. There is a yachtsman's anchor and a Danforth anchor stored in the port deck locker which can be lifted out with the main-mast halyard . A nylon anchor rode is fed up on deck from the chain locker with an eye showing. A davit for use on the port side fitting is stored in the fantail compartment under the transom seat.
